He snoozed the alarm clock and begged for a few more minutes of sleep. He suddenly heard his wife shouting “Wake up! You’re going to be late!”. So he dragged himself out of the bed to do his morning routines, wore his best suit, and then hurried his way to the office. A lot of people were rushing, thus he had a hard time taking his usual public means of transportation, so he decided to take a cab, but then heavy traffic was all over the tube, so he paid more for the ride. He rushed into the office and then heard a thundering voice saying “You’re late again!”. That was his boss (with a tiger snarl), along with officemates whispering and giggling while they gossiped about him.
Sound familiar? I can still imagine the agony of coming to an office for work every day: the heavy traffic, cost of transportation, and inconsiderate boss, and officemates who made gossiping a daily habit. They were all triggers of stress and inconvenience. After 18 years of working in various industries, I was given an opportunity to work from home and I’m so happy about it, hence I thought of sharing the reasons why I’m enjoying my home-based job.
Here are the 7 Crazy Things about Home-based Jobs:
1. I’m still in my pyjamas.
I’m in the comfort of my home, so I can be in my pajamas or any kind of clothes while working. No need to follow corporate attires. I can choose not to take a bath or brush my teeth, and I’m sure my boss wouldn’t fire me for that.
2. Save me!
You can do the math! Your salary minus transportation expenses and food allowance, less the amount you spend to buy power suits and dresses, then the never-ending deductions from the government and insurance. You might be shaking your head now in disgust and I’m nodding my head in gratitude because I save money since I don’t have to be burdened by those things.
3. I’m home!
I’m always home, and that allows me to spend more quality time with my family. The 3 to 4 hours travel time going to and coming home from work becomes a meaningful time to take care of my children and more wonderful moments with my husband.
4. Inhale….Exhale….
I find it so rewarding to be free from heavy traffic, office politics, and other work stresses. I can prepare and eat healthy meals, rather than getting snacks from a vending machine or eating in a fast-food chain.
5. I’m out of the box!
In an office setup, you work based on what you are labeled, and usually, it’s only for one task. Home-based jobs offer job enrichment and the opportunity to do a variety of work-related to all of your skills and knowledge. I personally enjoy being a researcher, an article writer, and administrative support for Overpass, because it showcases all my talents, skills, and knowledge in every area, giving me a chance to learn more and grow.
6. Good Results x2
Home-based workers tend to be more productive because they’re free from workplace distractions, although distractions from home cannot be avoided but it’s more manageable. And since stress is less, workers can work more efficiently and productively.
7. Have a more balanced life!
Based on studies, 78% of those who are absent from work are not really sick but have problems with family matters. Office workers find it hard to balance their priorities between work or family life because of many things to consider, but working at home reduces the dilemma, so that’s why I love working from home.
My work will be done in a few minutes, then I can lay on our bed and kiss my baby goodnight. No need for my family to wait for me to come home. Now, isn’t that so wonderful?! And by the way, just a secret…my kind-hearted boss pays me in advance. (Insert smiley face)
Yes, I know it’s crazy, but it’s true!
