The History of Bengali
- Old Bengali - around 1000 AD: The Emergence of Bengali evolved circa 1000-12000 AD from Sanskrit and Magadhi Prakrit but the language was not stable then and authors wrote in multiple dialects. In this period, Bengali was used for religious documents and devotional songs.
- Middle Bengali - around 1400 AD to 1800 AD: This period is characterised by the elision of word-final অ ô, the spread of compound verbs and borrowing of Perso-Arabic terms into Bengali vocabulary. Bengali was the official court language of the Sultanate of Bengal and became the most spoken vernacular language in the Sultanate. The most significant work in this era is the Shreekrishna Kirtana, a drama composed of poetry detailing many folk literature stories in 417 verses and 133 Sanskrit shlokas.
- New Bengali - Bengali today: The modern literary form of Bengali was developed during the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is primarily characterised by the shortening of pronouns and verbs. The modern Bengali vocabulary contains the vocabulary base from Magadhi Prakrit, Pali and Tatsamas and other major borrowings from Persian, Arabic and Austroasiatic languages.
