Which Apps Does Facebook Own?

May 11, 2018 by Rowena Gabriel 12 Comments

Over the years, Facebook has become a multi-billion dollar social media company since it was founded on February 4th, 2004. Since then, Facebook has grown to be arguably one of the most well-known companies worldwide. Along with its success, Facebook has merged with and acquired other companies in its lifetime, in fact too many to list here! So for today, we will focus on the most prominent and most well-known apps which Facebook has managed to get its hands on!

Messenger

First of all, a slightly obvious one – Facebook Messenger. It was created by Facebook so it should come as no shock that Facebook owns it. It has replaced what used to be Facebook Chat and has been improved for better and smoother user experience.

According to statistics, Messenger has an average recording of 1.3 billion active users! Not bad!

Whatsapp

Whatsapp, the social messaging, photo, and video-sharing platform were founded in 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum, both former employees of Yahoo!

In February 2014, Facebook announced that it would be buying the company WhatsApp for US$19 billion. Whatsapp have now recorded around 55 billion messages sent per day between users!

Instagram

Instagram, the photo, and the video-sharing social network is now also owned by Facebook! Created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, it was launched in October 2010 on iOS, and on Android in April 2012. One could also view Instagram pages on a web interface as of November 2012.

In March 2012, Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion, with plans to keep Instagram independently managed. This deal was officially closed between Facebook and Instagram on September 6, 2012.

Masquerade (MSQRD)

Masquerade is a face tracking and 3D face placement app. Face-changing apps became popular when Snapchat added face-changing features to their app in 2015, and it could be assumed that Facebook bought MSQRD in attempt to compete against Snapchat. Indeed, Facebook had already attempted to buy Snapchat for $3 billion back in 2013, however, Snapchat refused this offer.

Oculus VR

Facebook acquired Oculus VR back in 2014 and this was founded in July 2012. A company that mainly focused on the development of virtual reality software and hardware products, just like what its name suggests.

The most famous of them is Oculus Rift – a VR headset released in March 2016 and in 2017, the company sold nearly 700,000 items of this device.
